War Stories: Tales of Courage and Hope

GLPJ held this storytelling event on March 13th at the Pollard Library. It was an afternoon of stories of individuals who have lived though war. We heard diverse voices speak about their experiences and war's effects on peoples' lives.

If you missed this event, it was taped by John Martin for the TV show Perspectives, to be broadcast on LTC (channel 8) soon. We'll be letting everyone know when it will be aired via email and on this website.

Our storytellers included:
David Tierney, Marine veteran, on Vietnam;
Soady Ouch on Cambodia;
Domnang Pin, artist, on Cambodia;
Uta Musgray, who read a letter by her mother about her experiences in WWII;
Chris Offerman, talking about post-WWII Germany;
and George Capaccio of Voices in the Wilderness, a witness in present-day Iraq.

Civil Liberties and the USA PATRIOT Act
Nancy Murray of the ACLU, guest speaker
On Thursday, November 13th 2003, Nancy Murray of the ACLU spoke to a group of students, faculty, and community members about the USA PATRIOT Act at UMass-Lowell South. This event is co-sponsored with PACSI (Peace and Conflict Studies Institute) of UMass-Lowell.

There was a strong response and many great questions from the audience. We'd like to thank PACSI for the chance to work with them to provide opportunities to educate the public on this important issue.

Bus Trip to D.C. march Against Iraq and USA PATRIOT Act
On October 25th 2003 several members of Greater Lowell for Peace and Justice joined International A.N.S.W.E.R. and United for Peace and Justice on a bus to D.C. for a march against the war and the USA PATRIOT Act.

It was a great success (some of you may have caught the coverage on C-SPAN) and made an impressive showing as the march progressed peacefully through the streets of D.C. We will be putting up some photos of the rally and march as soon as we can.

Our bus was generously organized by the UJP (United for Justice with Peace) coalition.
